The first parliamentary election in Nepal was held on Falgun 7, 2015 BS (February 18, 1959 AD). It featured 109 constituencies and over 700 candidates competing in direct elections. Only citizens aged 21 and above were eligible to vote in this historic election.

Unlike the current system, where constituencies are numbered within each district (e.g., 1, 2, 3), a distinctive feature of the first general election was that constituencies were numbered sequentially across the entire country.

According to the Election Commission, the total number of registered voters was 4,246,468.

The Nepali Congress, represented by the election symbol of a tree, emerged as the country's leading party, securing a two-thirds majority with 74 seats.

The Rashtriya Gorkha Party, symbolized by a hut, became the main opposition party, winning 19 seats.

The Samyukta Prajatantra Party, with 5 seats, established itself as the third political force in Nepal.

The Nepal Communist Party secured 4 seats, placing it fourth.

From the Nepal Praja Parishad, the faction led by Bhadrakali Mishra—using the symbol of three corn stalks and a sickle—won 2 seats, while the faction led by Tanka Prasad Acharya, with the symbol of paddy, also won 2 seats.

Additionally, four independent candidates emerged victorious in the election.

A notable highlight was Suvarna Shamsher, the head of the electoral government, who became the "man of the election" by winning from three different constituencies.
