On the occasion of the birth anniversary of King Birendra in the year Poush 14 2032 B.S (28 December 1975), the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur trolley bus service was inaugurated. The Chinese government extended financial assistance of NRP 40 million to operate 22 trolleybuses manufactured by the Shanghai SK 541 model. These trolleybuses, numbered from 001 to 022, were left-hand-steering vehicles, unlike the right-hand-steering vehicles common in Nepal. 20 years later when the first batch began to show signs of aging, the Chinese Government supported it by donating an additional 10 trolley buses.

The trolley bus running 13 km between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur brought great convenience to the passengers who otherwise had to rely on bicycles or on foot.

However, the trolley bus service after the fall of the Panchayat System in 2046 B.S fell prey to employee politics, whose sole priority was to gain favor with superiors over putting in genuine effort, and as a result, those electric buses ran into financial losses. Following the losses, the government decided to cancel the Nepal Transport Institute on 1st Poush 2058 B.S (Dec 2001). With no organization to operate the trolley buses, the service came to a halt, leaving many passengers disappointed.

However, the #trolleybuses were reinstated 2 years later and the service resumed, albeit with a reduced distance of 3 kilometers. Unfortunately, this revival was short-lived. In Mangshir 2065, after five years of running the trolleybus service sadly ceased existing forever on the road but continuously in the hearts of everyday commuters.
