Lal Babu Pandit was the Minister of General Administration under Prime Minister Late Sushil Koirala's Council of Ministers from 25 February 2014 – 12 October 2015. During this, he gained publicity for his campaign against officials holding Permanent Resident status of other countries. He received several death threats for this action. Pandit also warned that the Government will be forced to take action against employees for their laid-back attitude. 

He was again appointed as Minister of Federal Affairs and General Administration under Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli's Council of Ministers from 16 March 2018 – 20 November 2019. He was elected to the House of Representatives from Morang - 6 in the 2017 election by defeating Congress candidate Shekhar Koirala. 

He was elected to the First and Second Constituent Assembly under the Proportional Representation system.

Pandit, in collaboration with Publication Nepalaya, published his Autobiography "Singh Durbar Badalne Sangharsha", A Struggle to Change Singha Durbar in 2017. The book is about a Political Leader who has committed his 40 years of Political Career to uprooting corruption and malpractices from Nepal. In a cover, Pandit is seen riding a bicycle in front of Singha Durbar, the Rana Palace that now houses the Ministry Offices and the Headquarters of Radio Nepal and Nepal Television.
