Aakash Bhairab during Indra Jatra by Sunil Sharma

A central ritual of "Indra Jatra" aka Yeny, as they call the festival in the local Newar language in Kathmandu, involves the ceremonial display of Aakash Bhairabh, literally the "Bhairab of Sky" in English. Each year, the large, blue-faced mask of deity is removed from his two-storey temple in Indrachowk and placed on a richly decorated wooden platform directly in front of the shrine. This public installation allows visitors both, to worship the deity more closely and also to photograph Him, which is forbidden otherwise. With fierce eyes, a wide mouth, and an elaborate crown, the deity's image becomes the focus of worship and celebration.

The mask adorned with a silver crown and symbolic ornaments, is propitiated through formal rituals conducted by priests. A key aspect of the ceremony is the distribution of prasad, often rice beer (thwon in Newar Language) or other sacred food, believed to carry the blessings of Aakash Bhairab.

The practice underscores the deity's importance in ensuring protection, prosperity, and good fortune for the worshippers and their community. The public veneration of Aakash Bhairab during Indra Jatra is a centuries-old tradition, deeply rooted in the cultural and religious fabric of the Kathmandu Valley.

Legend of Aakash Bhairab

 According to local tradition, Aakash Bhairab is not just a deity but also associated with the decapitated head of King Yalambar, the first Kiranti Monarch who reigned the Kathmandu valley a thousand years ago. Yalambar, the mighty warrior, joined the great Mahabharat battle between Pandavas and Kauravas, and sided Kauravas because they were on the losing side.

Lord Krishna, knowing Yalambar's strength and the possible devastation he could cause, used His divine power and severed Yalambar's head before he could even enter the battle. 

Yalambar requested to witness the battle even though he could not be part of it. His wish was granted, and later, His head was believed to have been carried away and enshrined in Kathmandu. Over Time, this head came to be worshipped as Aakash Bhairabh, the "Sky God" symbolizing both protection and power.

Thus, Aakash Bhairab embodies a unique blend of history, myth, and divinity—part fierce guardian deity, part ancestral king.
